What Is Affordable Housing?

This Affordable Housing Month, we’re coming together with our Bay Area affordable housing community to share what affordable housing is and what it means for our communities.

We have powerful stories, data, and messages that have been proven to move the needle on support for affordable housing solutions. Together, let’s use these tools to deepen conversations and connect our work to the solutions that our industry is working for every day.

  • Affordable Housing Is Community. We know that our communities thrive when we all have a place to call home. In this moment of federal cruelty toward low-income tenants, we continue to choose affordable housing to prioritize care and compassion for residents throughout the Bay Area and California. Our ongoing, collective work to provide stable and affordable homes is working, supporting our communities by housing our neighbors most in need.

  • Affordable Housing Is Progress. The future we envision for our communities is feasible, with progress made toward our goals every year. For example:

✅ In 2023, our collective work supported the Bay Area in moving 20,000 people out of homelessness and into supportive housing.

✅ In 2025, more than 1,000 new affordable homes across the Bay Area opened to families, seniors, veterans, and other local residents during May Affordable Housing Month.

  • Affordable Housing Is Powerful. Affordable housing is more than homes; it’s a proven way to unlock a brighter future for all aspects of society. In 2023, when California opened nearly 20,000 new affordable homes to our community members, those new homes provided 342,000 jobs, reduced 931,000 Greenhouse Gas emissions annually, and saved $2 million through reduced childhood asthma ER visits alone. Additionally, studies show that 96% of people who move into Bay Area Supportive Housing remain stably housed for at least 12 months, and 86% don’t experience homelessness ever again.
