Satellite Affordable Housing Associates and Native American Health Center are hosting a joint grand opening to celebrate the construction completion of the 5-story mixed-use development project with 76 units of affordable housing, health clinic, and cultural community center in Fruitvale.
Project Name Background: The name Flicker was chosen to honor the California Native peoples whose lands we are on, who have long used feathers from the Northern Flicker bird in traditional regalia and headdresses. These feathers are deeply meaningful, representing strength, continuity, and spiritual connection.
The architecture draws direct inspiration from the flicker feather headdress worn by many California Native tribes, with a sculptural representation rising above the building’s entrance. On either side, large-scale public art welcomes visitors with imagery of daily life for California Natives prior to colonization–depicting traditions and practices that remain vibrant and alive today.
